Oglebay Park's spacious outdoor amphitheatre with nationwide television covereage is being considered for the proposed debate between presidential hopefuls Hubert Humphrey and John F. Kennedy on April 29.

Forces for the two presidential candidates were meeting in Charleston today to consider the Wheeling proposal.

George Diab, news director for WTRF-TV in Wheeling, said that if the proposal is accepted NBC News has agreed to provide live coverage of the public debate through local facilities between 7:30 and 8 p.m. at the park.

In making the proposal to the candidates, it was pointed out that a live audience of some 7,000 persons could view the debate.

The question of a debate between the two candidates who are meeting in the West Virginia primary election May 10 arose Tuesday during Kennedy's tour of Wheeling.

After Humphrey's camp issued a challenge for a face-to-face public meeting on the issues, Kennedy did a turn-about from his stand in Wisconsin when he shunned a debate and said he would be "delighted" to meet the Minnesota Senator "anytime or anyplace."

During an interview over WTRF, Diab offered the local facilities for the debate and Kennedy said he would be willing if it could be arranged.

Since that time several cities in the state have submitted similar offers and a Humphrey spokesman said yesterday that three sites were being considered: Wheeling, Charleston and Huntington.

A decision on the proposed site is expected to be anounced later today or tomorrow.

Robert Kennedy, former chief counsel of the Senate Rackets Committee, will be the guest speaker at the luncheon session of the conference scheduled May 5 by the Ohio Valley Advertising Club.

Kennedy who resigned his post with the Senate committee over a year ago to direct his brother[']s (Sen. John F. Kennedy D-Mass) campaign for president, will speak to a joint session of all persons attending that conference at the McLure Hotel.

His topic will be "The Enemy Within" and will deal with much of the material he presented in his recently-released book of the same title.

Kennedy was born in 1925 in Boston, is married and has seven children. He graduated from Harvard University and the Law School at the University of Virginia and was first admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1955.

The luncheon speech by Kennedy will be one of the highlights of the conference scheduled to begin May 5 at 9:30 a.m.

The conference will consist of two divisions, one for retail personnel and the other for industry and four sessions will be conducted in each department.

Two discussion groups will be held for both phases in the morning and two in the afteroon following the luncheon.

The day will be topped off with the organization's annual Award's Banquet at the Colonnade Room of the Hotel McLure that evening.

Robert H. Braun, director of advertising for the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., will be the principal speaker for that session.
