U. S. Stature Fallen, Says FDR Jr.
October 2, 1960
WINFIELD - (AP_ - "The surest road to peace is for America to be so strong that no one would dare to start a war," former Rep. Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr., said Saturday, and added:
"We cannot say that this is true today."
Roosevelt spoke at a Democratic rally in front of the Putnam County Courthouse.
Citing disturbances which caused cancellation of President Eisenhower's trip to Japan and which marked Vice President Nixon's visit to South America, Roosevelt said "the stature of America has fallen and deteriorted in the past eight years."
He said election of Democratic nominee John F. Kennedy to the presidency would "provide the leadership for the United States to move ahead."
Referring to Kennedy's presidential primary victory in this state over Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, (D-Minn.), Roosevelt said "Jack Kennedy would not be where he is today if it were not for West Virginia."
