Eight young artists have been selected as winners in the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History’s annual Youth Art Month Exhibition, which is on display through April 24 in the wings of the Lobby and Balcony Galleries of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The program is produced in cooperation with the West Virginia Education Association and the West Virginia Department of Education, in celebration of National Youth Art Month.
The winners’ work will be placed in the permanent collection of the West Virginia State Museum. Each of the eight winners will receive a $50 gift certificate from Dick Blick Art Materials at an awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 12, in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center. In addition, three works in the exhibition have been selected to represent West Virginia in the annual Congressional Art Competition for High School students. The Congressional Competition is sponsored by members of the United State Congress and culminates in a summer exhibition at the United States Capitol building.
The Youth Art Month Exhibition consists of 82 pieces by 80 students, grades K-12, from 21 West Virginia counties. Artworks in the annual exhibition were selected from a statewide competition. All winners were chosen by Charleston artist Jan Griffin. Griffin studied at Marshall University under the guidance of June Kilgore, and later opened Sassafrolly Studio where she works on a daily basis, creating limited edition silk screen prints and watercolor monoprints. She has been in more than 100 juried exhibitions and numerous invitational gallery shows. Griffin’s work can be found in many collections including FMC Corp., Blue Cross Blue Shield of West Virginia, Baltimore Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va., West Virginia Water Company and Cedar Lakes Arts and Crafts Fair to name a few. Her work has won awards including the West Virginia Artist Award at the Cultural Center of Fine Arts in Parkersburg in 2000, Honorable Mention in the prestigious Miniature Sculptors, Painters and Gravers Society’s annual international competition in Washington, D.C. and most recently an Awardof Excellence for her serigraph Nude at Dusk at the West Virginia Juried Exhibition 2003 at the Cultural Center.
A list of the winners is enclosed along with a complete list of students whose work is included in the exhibition.
Youth Art Month was established to underscore the importance of including arts experiences in all students’ education. For more information about the Youth Art Month Exhibition, call Stephanie Lilly, exhibits coordinator for the Division, at (304) 558-0220, ext. 128.
