Annual quilt exhibition opens at the Cultural Center

Art and utility will unite as the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History opens its annual exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2005, in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The crowd-pleasing juried exhibition features 50 exquisite quilts and wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quilters. Quiltmaking is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most treasured art forms, and this annual display has become a tradition with visitors from all over the United States and abroad. The exhibition is on display through Sept. 5.

Prizes were awarded in four categories: pieced quilts, appliqued quilts, mixed/other quilts, and wall hangings. A complete list of exhibitors and winners is attached.

Jane Brown of Winchester, Ky., was the judge for this year’s exhibition. She has been certified with the National Quilting Association since 1988 and has judged shows and exhibits in Kentucky, California, North Carolina and Tennessee. She holds a master’s degree in weaving and design from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and has been quilting for more than 25 years.

Quilts and Wall Hangings 2005 will be on display during the 29th annual Vandalia Gathering festival, which will be held this weekend at the Cultural Center and on the State Capitol grounds. The exhibition awards will be presented to the winning quiltmakers in a ceremony preceding the Vandalia Gathering concert in the Norman L. Fagan West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 28.

The Cultural Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The Archives Library is closed on Sunday. For more information about Quilts and Wall Hangings 2005, call (304) 558-0162.
