Annual quilt exhibition opens at the Cultural Center

Art and utility unite with the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History’s annual exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2006, in the Great Hall and Art Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The crowd-pleasing juried exhibition features 61 exquisite quilts and wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quilters. Quiltmaking is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most treasured art forms, and this annual display has become a tradition with visitors from all over the United States and abroad. The wall hangings will be on display through Aug. 20 while the quilts can be seen until Sept. 4.

Prizes were awarded in four categories: pieced quilts, appliqued quilts, mixed/other quilts and wall hangings. First- ($500), second- ($400), and third-place ($300) awards were made in all four categories. In addition, fourth- ($200) and fifth-place awards ($100) were made in the wall hanging category. The Division also made two purchase awards, one quilt and one wall hanging, and the judge designated a Best of Show prize of $100. A complete list of exhibitors and winners in attached.

Anita Shackelford of Bucyrus, Ohio, was the judge for this year’s exhibition. She has been certified with the National Quilting Association (NQA) since 1982, and has been involved in judging shows at local, regional and national levels. She currently is the program coordinator and serves on the faculty for the NQA’s Quilt Judging Seminar. Her quilts have been exhibited in shows across the United States and in Australia, winning many awards including 12 Best of Shows and others for workmanship.

The Cultural Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The Archives Library is closed on Sunday. For more information about Quilts and Wall Hangings 2006, call (304) 558-0162.
