Dance on down to Clifftop for the second annual Balance and Spin weekend July
26-28. Join old-time dance fans for a weekend of shared dance bliss and music
at beautiful Camp Washington-Carver. The three-day gathering will feature dance
workshops for all ages and abilities, as well as nightly square and contra dances.
The activities will kick off with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday, July
26. A square/contra dance will follow at 8 p.m. in the Great Chestnut Lodge.
Dance workshops will begin Saturday morning, July 27, in the lodge at 10 a.m. The Saturday night old-time/contra dance will begin at 8 p.m. in the lodge. The weekend wraps up on Sunday, July 28, with a dance in the lodge at 10 a.m. The event’s dance callers, musicians and workshop leaders all are volunteers.
Daily admission is $10. Rough camping is $20 for individuals or $50 per family for the entire weekend. The camping fee includes all activities. The gates will open to campers at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 26.
Located in Fayette County on Route 41 near Babcock State Park, Camp Washington-Carver is operated by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History. A historic mountaintop retreat, the facility nurtures the cultural heritage embodied in the site since its dedication in 1942 as an agricultural extension and 4-H camp for African Americans. The Great Chestnut Lodge, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is the largest log structure of its kind in the world. Each season features events chosen to preserve the arts and traditions of yesterday while perpetuating those of today.
