The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will begin a new series of workshops, Discover Arts and Crafts, on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. This first workshop will focus on Native American crafts and there is a $25 fee per person. Participation is limited to 20 students, aged 15 to adult, and reservations are required.
Mike and Cheryl Golden of Philippi will lead the workshop. Participants will make medicine bags from pre-cut leather by stitching them together. They also will learn the art of Native American stone carving. The Golden’s will provide kits with the leather for the medicine bags, strips for stitch work, needles and sinew, stones and small knives for carving. There will be additional leather strips for students wishing to do extra stitch work.
The Golden’s specialize in leather regalia and travel to pow wows throughout the Eastern United States demonstrating and selling their work. They belong to Middle Island Creek, a group of different tribes of Indians, and to Appalachian American Indians of West Virginia, of which Mike is a council member.
