Free Family Fun Day events for the winter months of January and February, 2002, will concentrate on the cultural heritage of West Virginia’s Native Americans, Jewish Americans and African Americans. The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will continue its Free Family Fun Day series on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. Hands-on activities are geared for children; however, visitors of all ages are invited to discover something new by participating in the free event.
Kids can create Native American sand art pictures using colored sand and glue. They also can use beads to make Jewish and Native American objects including Star of David jewelry, and small African dancing dolls, dressing them in traditional African clothing.
In addition, they can learn about the Hebrew alphabet and cultural symbols, traditional Native American languages, the tribes that inhabited West Virginia and African American culture.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the nature of the activities children should wear play clothes. For more information about Free Family Fun Day, contact Bil Lepp, education coordinator for the Division at (304) 558-0220, ext. 131.
