Set your sights on the Cultural Center as the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History continues its Free Family Fun Day series on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the State Capitol Complex in Charleston. Hands-on activities are geared for children; however, visitors of all ages are invited to discover something new by participating in the free event.
This month’s theme of prehistoric hunting and gathering coincides with West Virginia’s annual Archaeology Month activities held in October. The staff of the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) will lead the program.
Participants will gather in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center to begin their exploration of West Virginia’s ancient past. Kids can make their own “prehistoric pottery puzzle” and try their hand at weaving a basket from recycled newspaper. In addition, they can make clay pots, plant seeds, use prehistoric tools and learn about foods native to West Virginia.
Because of the nature of the activities, children should wear play clothes. Kids must be accompanied by an adult.
Free Family Fun Day is part of the Division’s educational programming. The November 30 event will concentrate on holiday crafts as part of the annual Holiday Craft Fair at the Cultural Center. For more information about Free Family Fun Day, contact Bil Lepp, education coordinator for the Division at (304) 558-0220.
