In honor of Black History Month, the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will present a special free encore performance of the Charleston Stage Company’s (CSC) production of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m., in the Norman L. Fagan West Virginia State Theater at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. The award-winning play was written by Ntozake Shange.
First produced in 1975, the play explores what it was like to be a woman of color in the 20th century. The playwright combines literary and theatrical styles to develop a unique medium that includes a series of monologues linked together by dance and music. Categorized as a “choreopoem,” the play is performed with minimal scenery and props.
The play is directed by Patricia Thomas, a resident of Ohio, who also co-directed the CSC production of The Colored Museum. The cast includes Patty Rosebourgh as Lady in Brown; Janelle Williams as Lady in Red; Jasmine Smith as Lady in Blue; Jai Dyer as Lady in Purple; Katara Sowell as Lady in Yellow; Olubnmi Kusimo as Lady in Green; and Pia Edmonds as Lady in Orange. Tiffany Wesley created the choreography and performs as a featured dancer, as does Brittany Triggs, a member of the Capital High School Dance Company.
