Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex will present its annual Archaeology Weekend program entitled American Indian Skills from the Past on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 16, from 1 - 4 p.m. The program is timed to coincide with West Virginia Archaeology Month and is free and open to the public.
Owen Brown, member of the Catawba Indian Nation, and Joe Candillo, member of the Pascua Yaqui Indian Nation and educational cultural resource consultant for Grave Creek Mound, will lead the demonstrations showing various ways that American Indians of prehistoric times adapted to and lived in harmony with the environment. The program will take place on the grounds and include Native American flint knapping, hunting tools demonstration and discussion, pottery making, “primitive” fire making, hide tanning, storytelling, animal calls and traditional dancing.

Operated by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex features one of the largest and most famous burial mounds built by the prehistoric Adena people. A massive undertaking, construction of the mound took place in successive stages from about 250-150 B.C., and required the movement of more than 60,000 tons of earth. Exhibits and displays in the complex’s museum interpret what is known about the lives of these prehistoric people and the construction of the mound. The Museum is located at 801 Jefferson Ave., in Moundsville. Operating hours are Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 - 5 p.m.
