Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex to offer kids’ workshop on making an Indian Burden Basket on June 3 2006

Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex in Moundsville will conduct a workshop for kids in grades 4 - 8 who are interested in learning how to make a simple Indian Burden Basket out of natural materials. The workshop will take place from 1 - 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, June 3. There is a $5 fee to cover the cost of materials. Space is limited and registration is required.

The baskets will be made from jute. Participants will create the baskets using an open, cross-tie netting style of weaving and can take the baskets home with them.

The workshop gives children a hands-on opportunity to learn how indigenous people throughout North America made baskets which they used to carry an assortment of personal and utilitarian items when they were traveling. The workshop will be led by Joe Candillo, cultural programming coordinator for Grave Creek Mound.

For more information about the Indian Burden Basket workshop or to make a reservation for the class, contact Candillo at (304) 843-4128, ext. 202, or e-mail him at [email protected].
