Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex in Moundsville will conduct a workshop for kids in grades 4 - 8 who are interested in learning how to make a simple Indian Burden Basket out of natural materials. The workshop will take place from 1 - 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, June 3. There is a $5 fee to cover the cost of materials. Space is limited and registration is required.
The baskets will be made from jute. Participants will create the baskets using an open, cross-tie netting style of weaving and can take the baskets home with them.
The workshop gives children a hands-on opportunity to learn how indigenous people throughout North America made baskets which they used to carry an assortment of personal and utilitarian items when they were traveling. The workshop will be led by Joe Candillo, cultural programming coordinator for Grave Creek Mound.

Operated by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex features one of the largest and most famous burial mounds built by the prehistoric Adena people. A massive undertaking, construction of the mound took place in successive stages from about 250 - 150 B.C., and required the movement of more than 60,000 tons of earth. Exhibits and displays in the complex’s museum interpret what is known about the lives of these prehistoric people and the construction of the mound. The Complex is located at 801 Jefferson Ave., in Moundsville. Operating hours are Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from
1 - 4 p.m.
