The historic Jenkins Plantation Museum, located in the Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area of Cabell County, will host a Free Family Fun program to celebrate West Virginia Day on Thursday, June 20, 2002, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hands-on activities are geared for children; however, visitors of all ages are invited to discover something new by participating in the free event.
In honor of West Virginia’s 139th year of statehood, participants will explore West Virginia’s heritage through a variety of activities. They will discover how West Virginia became a state and why the State Capitol is located in Charleston.
Kids can learn about the history of the state flag and state seal and make their own flag out of felt. They will explore early modes of transportation in the state by building and decorating a paddle boat. In addition, they can play the county scrambled word game and learn some history of those counties.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the nature of the activities, children should wear play clothes.
The Jenkins Plantation Museum is located on West Virginia Route 2 between Huntington and Point Pleasant. A facility of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, the museum features the former home of Confederate General Albert Gallatin Jenkins. The 1835 house, built in the tradition of Tidewater, Va., is noteworthy for its architecture and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The museum was recently added to the Civil War Discovery Trail, which links more than 500 sites in 28 states to inspire and to teach the story of the Civil War and its enduring impact on America. The trail, an initiative of the Civil War Preservation Trust, includes battlefields, historic homes, stations on the Underground Railroad, cemeteries, parks and other destinations that help bring history to life.
