The Museum in the Park at Chief Logan State Park will ring in the holiday season with a family-oriented open house on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The days’s activities will include a performance by the Guyan Valley Cloggers at 1 p.m., and a read-aloud storytelling session for kids from 5-7 p.m. Holiday movies will be shown throughout the day.
Visitors also can view the six exhibits that are on display, including West Virginia Quilts: A Tradition of Excellence, a group of 10 award-winning quilts from the West Virginia State Museum collection and a selection of quilts by local quiltmakers; Trees of Light, an assortment of six holiday trees decorated by local organizations; the Island Creek Model Railroad HO-scale train display; a selection of three-dimensional art and sculpture from the West Virginia State Museum collection; artwork by local artists; and a local history tribute. Visitors can enjoy cookies, hot chocolate, coffee and apple cider throughout the day.
In addition, the final sessions for the museum’s fall art classes will be held. Children of all ages are invited to attend the holiday craft workshop, where they will be making ornaments, snowflakes, door hangers and more from 2-5 p.m. Because of the nature of the activity, children should wear their play clothes and bring a smock. Adults must accompany all children. The adult session will conclude its “Introduction to Oil Painting” workshop. The adult workshops are limited to 15 participants, and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested are encouraged to call and reserve a spot.
Both classes will be taught by Adam Hodges, programming specialist for the Museum. Hodges has taught adult courses in art at Marshall University, Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., and the Huntington Museum of Art, and served as an assistant for the Huntington Museum of Arts’s Art Day Camp for Kids for three years.
For more information about the holiday open house, contact Hodges, at (304) 792-7229, or Ryan Burns, assistant museums director, at (304) 558-0220, ext. 172.
