Logan County residents encouraged to share historic photos at Museum in the Park

6/13/03

Staff from the West Virginia State Archives will be at the Museum in the Park in Logan on Saturday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to copy old photographs that document the history of the Logan County area. Local individuals and organizations are encouraged to bring in their photographs of historical interest.

Black and white photographs that show businesses, street scenes, social and civic events, parades, disasters, people at work and play, and family gatherings are of particular interest. Recent color photos usually are not copied unless they document significant events such as the 1972 Buffalo Creek disaster.

Photographs will be copied while the owner waits. The originals will not be damaged and will be returned to the owner immediately. Copies will be added to the Archives collection and made available to the public. Selections from the photos copied may be displayed periodically at the Museum in the Park.

Part of the Chief Logan State Park complex, the Museum in the Park is a regional cultural center showcasing the best in West Virginia history and the arts. The museum, located four miles north of Logan on W.Va. Rt. 10, is operated by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History.

For more information about the photo copying project, please call Debra Basham at (304) 558-0220, ext. 702. The day of the event, call the Museum in the Park at (304) 792-7229.
