Get ready for an inspired comic romp and non-stop hilarity in Fayette County when Camp Washington-Carver’s Family Homestyle Dinner Theater Series presents the Not-for-Profit Players’ production of “The Foreigner” on Saturday, Aug. 24. The dinner buffet begins at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person for dinner and the performance. Children five and under are admitted free; tickets for seniors are $15.
“The Foreigner,” written by Larry Shue, is the winner of two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production. The two-act play demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters must deal with a “foreigner” who they think doesn’t understand English. Unfortunately for them, the “foreigner” is merely too shy to speak and overhears the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate, setting up the wickedly funny climax in which things go awry for the bad guys while the good guys emerge triumphant.
The Not-for-Profit Players is a group of Charleston-area actors who wanted to develop theater for a touring venue. “The Foreigner” marks the troupe’s fourth presentation at Camp Washington-Carver. Bethany Cline of Charleston is the artistic director. She holds a performance degree in theater from Marshall University and has worked for Theatre West Virginia, on such national television programs as “America’s Most Wanted” and “Real Stories of the Highway Patrol,” in the CBS made-for-television movie “Country Justice” with the late George C. Scott, and in local community theater productions.
The dinner buffet includes sliced turkey breast, baked ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, salad and homemade rolls. At intermission, playgoers will be treated to homemade cobbler and ice cream.
The Family Homestyle Dinner Theater Series brings Broadway-style entertainment and delicious homecooked meals to visitors at Camp Washington-Carver’s Great Chestnut Lodge. The camp is located adjacent to Babcock State Park just off Route 60 (Midland Trail) on Route 41 in Clifftop, Fayette County.
