Youth Art Exhibition winners announced

3/13/01

Eight young artists have been selected as winners in this year’s Youth Art Month Exhibition, which is on display through April 15 in the wings of the Balcony Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston.

The winners’ work will be placed in the permanent collection of the West Virginia State Museum. Each of the eight winners will receive a $50 gift certificate from Dick Blick Art Materials at an awards ceremony at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 16, in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center.

In addition, three works in the exhibition have been selected to represent West Virginia in the annual Congressional Art Competition for High School Students. The Congressional Competition is sponsored by members of the United States Congress and culminates in a summer exhibition at the United States Capitol Building.

The Youth Art Month Exhibition features the works of 91 students, grades K-12, from 23 West Virginia counties. Artworks in the annual exhibition were selected from a statewide competition. The program is produced in cooperation with the West Virginia Education Association and the West Virginia Department of Education in celebration of National Youth Art Month.

All winners were chosen by Charleston artist Betty Warner. She is best known for her watercolor paintings and has participated in invitational group exhibitions at The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC; Stifel Fine Arts Center, Wheeling; Sunrise Museum’s Award Winners Show, Charleston; and the Art Students League Students’ show, New York. Warner’s work also is represented in many corporate and private collections. In addition, she plays the violin and has performed with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

A list of the winners is enclosed along with a complete list of students whose work is included in the exhibition.

National leaders established Youth Art Month to underscore the importance of including arts experiences in all students’ education. For more information about the Youth Art Month Exhibition, call Stephanie Lilly, exhibits coordinator for the Division, at (304) 558-0220, ext. 128.
