Child of the Rebellion: West Virginia Sesquicentennial
Civil War Union Militia Correspondence

Virginia Gilmer County

I Philip Cox Adjutant 165 Regt of Virginia Militia, do hereby certify that on the 5th day of April 1862 at Steer Creek, I superintended the election of a captain and two lieutenants of one of the companies of said Regiment. When the votes of all the members of the company present being given Viva Voce, a majority was found to be in favor of Jacob Stout for first Lt. and a majority in favor of John S Robertson for Second Lt. of said Company to fill the vacancies occaisioned by the failure of the former officers of the said company to take the several oaths prescribed by law. I therefore certify that the said Robert W Walker was duly elected Captain and Jacob Stout first Lt. and John S Robertson second Lt and that a majority of the persons entitled to vote were present, and that election was fairly and justly conducted. Given under my hand this 5th day of April 1862
