April 2nd 1865

Hon F. P. Pierpont

Der[sic] sir           I made a statement to His Excellency a short time ago in relation to my company and requested that he appoint R W Varner late a Lunt[unreadable] Cols 10 Reg WVabal Inftry to Command it it is highly important that some kind of a military organization should be kept in this county although the war should close

There is house thieves in these mountains and will remain untill[sic] they are exterminated said Varner served nearly fours years in the U S army was honorably discharged & came near loosing[sic] his life here by Guirellas[sic] since his return under the present circumstances I should think will be a sufficent[sic] no left in the Company after the 6th of May to do what will necessary as a military organization[sic] untill[sic] fall

I have yet no instructions in regard to my Company       if any instructions mine sent they were Captured with our mail about a week ago

I Remain Your
Most Obedient Servant
