Abstract: Papers of Judge Charles H. Haden, II. Charles H. Haden, II received a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1958 and a law degree in 1961 from West Virginia University. From 1961-1969, he practiced law with his father in Morgantown. In 1962, he was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates, and served from 1963-1964. He was appointed State Tax Commissioner in 1969, a position he held until 1972, when he was appointed as a justice for the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. Justice Haden won election to the post in 1972 and was selected Chief Justice of the Court in 1975. Later that year, he was nominated by President Gerald Ford as judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. From 1982-2002 he served as Chief Judge for the Southern District. He was a representative for the United States Judicial Conference, Fourth Circuit district judges and in 1999 was named to the executive committee. In 2000 he was named chairman of the Executive Committee of the United States Judicial Conference by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and served in that role until 2002.
