State Academy of Science Will Be Organized Today
Teachers of Scientific Subjects All Over State Meeting With West Virginia University Society
Today - All Day Sessions.
November 28, 1924
The science teachers of West Virginia will gather today for a meeting under the auspices of the scientific leaders of West Virginia University, at which time it is likely that a West Virginia State Academy of Science will be organized, embracing all of the teachers of scientific societies in the University, colleges, preparatory schools and high schools of the state.
The first session will be held this morning at 9:30 when the state representatives will assemble in the physics room of the University with Dr. George Bancroft, president of the West Virginia Scientific Society presiding.
Dr. Frank B. Trotter, president of the University will welcome the visitors and Dr. John A. Eiesland will state the object of the meeting and the appointments for the meeting will be made at this time.
The day will be devoted to business sessions and in the evening Dr. Francis H. Herrick, professor of zoology at Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, will lecture on "Animal Instinct and Intelligence."
His studies, the most intimate ever made upon the national bird, have been carried on at an observatory 100 feet above the ground and only 18 feet above the margin of the nest. In this observatory he is able to watch the eagles without their being aware of his presence near them. He has taken many pictures from this observation post. He will show many original pictures from this observation post. Pictures of the lobster, bee, bird, cat and dog, illustrating various reactions in the lower animals that give evidence of real intelligence.
Professor Joseph Reigard of the University of Michigan after hearing this lecture said, "Dr. Herrick's lecture on the Habits of Wild Birds before the Michigan Academy of Sciences was illustrated by a magnificent series of lantern slides taken from instantaneous photographs, and showing the behavior of both old and young birds. His account of the daily life of the birds held the attention of an audience of more than twenty-five hundred people for over an hour. The lecture is unique, interesting to a degree, and important."
