Proceedings of the Hampshire County Convention.
May 5, 1863
At a meeting of the loyal citizens of Hampshire county, held at New Creek Station, on Saturday, April 25th, for the purpose of appointing delegates to the Convention to be held at Parkersburgh [sic] on the 6th day of May next for the selection of proper persons to fill the various State offices under the new Constitution.
On motion, Mr. James Carskadon was called to the chair, and C. S. Jones appointed Secretary.
The Chairman having explained the object of the meeting.
Upon motion of Thos. R. Carskadon, a committee of five were appointed by the Chair to select six suitable persons to act as delegates for the county.
The following gentlemen were appointed - O. D. Downey, John Hughes, D. H. Long, James H. Trout, and Frederick Hoffman,
Who having retired for a few minutes, reported the following names for the consideration of the meeting - G. W. Sheets, John Hughes, Jas. Carskadon, Thos. Paxton, Wright Welton, and C. S. Jones.
On motion, the above named gentlemen were duly elected delegates to said Convention.
On motion, Thomas R. Carskadon and H. G. Davis were appointed alternates.
On motion the following resolution was offered and unanimously adopted by the meeting:
Resolved, That our delegates be and they are hereby instructed to support non but unconditional Union men and firm friends of the New State.
On motion,
Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be published in the Wheeling Intelligencer.
On motion, the meeting adjourned.
