War Meeting in Hancock County.
January 4, 1864
A mass meeting of the citizens of Hancock county was organized in the Court House on Tuesday, the 29th inst., and was addressed in an able manner by Samuel Crane, Esq., State Auditor, and Rev. D. Hervey; after which a series of resolutions were adopted unanimously, of which the following is a synopsis.
Resolved, That we will pay to each volunteer from Hancock county who may have enlisted in the three years' service of the U. S. Army, since the formation of the 12th Regiment Va. Vol. Infantry, the sum of sixty dollars.
Resolved, That we will pay to the indigent wife or mother of each volunteer from Hancock county who now is or may be enlisted and accepted (prior to January 5th, 1864) in the three years' service of the U. S. Army, the sum of five dollars per month, to commence on January 5th, 1864, and continue during the service of such volunteer.
Resolved, That we will pay to each volunteer from Hancock county who may be enlisted and accepted by the proper authorities (prior to January 5th, 1864) in the three years' service of the U. S. army, the sum of two hundred dollars.
Resolved, That B. J. Smith, Esq., of Clay township, be appointed to receive and disburse the funds provided for the payment of the above bounties.
Resolved, That we hereby direct and authorize the Board of Supervisors to levy upon the property of this county, taxable for county purposes, a sufficient amount to meet all the above liabilities.
Resolved, That the Wheeling Intelligencer and Wellsburgh Herald be requested to publish to proceedings of this meeting.
