January 1
A skirmish took place at Bunker Hill in Berkeley County.

January 2
Confederate forces captured a Union wagon train of supplies between New Creek and Petersburg in present day Grant County.

January 3
The surgeons of the 2nd Division of West Virginia held a meeting at Petersburg where they adopted resolutions mourning the death of Surgeon J. W. Moss of the 14th (West) Virginia Infantry.

January 4
A deserter named John T. Davis was arrested in Wheeling after he was discovered working in the city after leaving the 9th Ohio Cavalry and was sent to the Atheneum.

Thirty African-American troops passed through Wheeling on their way to New Brighton, Pennsylvania.

January 5
Two women who were aiding the South by cutting telegraph wires escaped from Atheneum and then gave themselves up to authorities.

There was a skirmish at Romney in the evening.

A skirmish occurred at Moorefield Junction.

The second West Virginia Legislature convened in Wheeling.

A skirmish occurred in Petersburg.

A young woman was discovered in a group of Confederate prisoners of war who were being held at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; she was removed from the prison, given women's clothing, and returned to her parents' home less than three miles from Harpers Ferry.

William E. Stevenson from Wood County was elected President of the State Senate.

Lee Roy Kramer from Monongalia County was elected Speaker of the House of Delegates.

January 20
A resolution passed the State Senate that Mason County jail would serve as the temporary State prison.

January 21
The state legislature voted to instruct the congressional delegation from West Virginia to pressure Congress to change the Treasury Department's trade restrictions due to their negative impact on the West Virginian economy.

January 22
Governor Boreman discussed with General Halleck changing the trade restriction on West Virginia businesses.

January 23
At a Union meeting held at New Hope in Morgan County, resolutions were passed, including one that welcomed the return of the 15th Virginia Infantry Regiment.

The State Legislature adopted a resolution for Brigadier General W. W. Averill and his officers to be thanked by the people of West Virginia for their victory at Droop Mountain.

January 26
The legislature enacted the "Act to Provide for the Relief of the Families of Soldiers."

Generals Don Carlos Buell and Frank Wheaton stopped by the McClure House in Wheeling.

A meeting of Battery D, 1st West Virginia Light Artillery, was held.

The 3rd West Virginia Cavalry was ordered to capture a small rebel force near Guyandotte in Cabell County and did near Wayne County Courthouse.

The First West Virginia Cavalry arrived in Wheeling and camped on Wheeling Island.

A Union supply wagon train was captured at Medley.

Two citizens were arrested after they crossed into battle lines on the Sperryville Road near Charles Town in Jefferson County.

A skirmish occurred at Petersburg.
