West Virginia and the Civil War
An Annotated Bibliography

The West Virginia Archives and History Library contains a wealth of books and pamphlets on the American Civil War, covering nearly every possible aspect of the conflict. However, this particular bibliography is limited to West Virginia and its connection to the war and contains many works in which the state is included in some capacity but not normally identified as being a component of the book or pamphlet. Included are general works, biographies, battles and campaigns, regimental histories, personal narratives and memoirs, guerilla warfare and spies, county histories devoted to the war, and reunions and veterans organizations. Many entries have brief descriptions of the works provided by the Archives library staff. Not included are such subjects as statehood, John Brown and Harpers Ferry, John Hunt Morgan and his raid, Stonewall Jackson, and Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Valley Campaign. The reason for this is that the Archives library has a massive amount of material on these subjects, which can best be researched through the online Voyager catalog and the West Virginia Memory Project. This bibliography is by no means definitive or complete, but it does serve as an informative directory to books and pamphlets in the Archives library that have either a direct or indirect focus on West Virginia and the war.

Dickinson, Jack L. Tattered Uniforms and Bright Bayonets: West Virginia's Confederate Soldiers. Huntington WV: Marshall University Library Association, 1995. Dickinson's detailed work sought to refute claims by early historians that Confederate soldiers numbered some 8,000. The book features early militia organizations in western Virginia, origins of early Confederate units in the region, and an alphabetized list of more than 17,000 Confederate troops. 973.742 D553t.
