Burnsville Boy Gets 135 Points In 173-43 Win
January 27, 1960
Forward Danny Heater scored a fantastic 135 points here Tuesday night, setting what is believed to be a national scholastic record, as Burnsville defeated Widen, 173-43.
Heater, a six-foot senior, made 53 field goals and 29 of 41 free throws in his record-breaking performance. He went into the game with a 27-point average.
Burnsville Coach Jack Stalnaker said his team went into the game with the idea of letting Heater score as much as he could. "We just fed him the ball and let him try for a record," Stalnaker explained.
The national scholastic record is reputed to be 120 points, set in 1953 by Bob Boginrife of Midway High School in Sedalia, Ohio.
The 135 points wiped out the existing state record of 74 points scored by Henry Zeidler of Wellsburg. Zeidler hit for 31 field goals and 12 foul shots while leading his team to a 109-68 victory over Bethany in the 1955-56 season.
Heater hadn't played an entire game this season prior to Tuesday night, Stalnaker said. The Burnsville coach added that most of his points came on layups.
He made 53 of 70 shots from the floor, and also got 32 rebounds and came up with seven assists.
Burnsville, which is now averaging 99.2 points per game, has a 9-1 record. The Braxton Countians have won nine straight since losing their opener to Gassaway.
Stalnaker is in his third year as head coach at Burnsville.
