Georgeann's Slam Punctuates Victory

Elkins - West Virginia's Georgeann Wells punctuated a lopsided Mountaineer win - recording what is believed to be college basketball's first slam dunk by a woman - in the first round of the West Virginia Classic Friday night.
West Virginia topped the University of Charleston 110-82 in first-round tournament action at the Randolph County Armory.
In the evening's other first round game, Marshall walloped Fairmont State 78-55.
Wells, a 6-foot-7 junior, hammered home a right-handed dunk with 11:58 remaining in the second half against UC. The one handed slam made the score 85-50.
Wells thought she had recorded a dunk in a game last season. But the basket was overruled because a foul was called on her sister Marva, who was trailing the play at the time.
Wells and Dee Davis finished with 16 points each.
WVU's Alexis Basil, playing before her hometown fans, lead all scorers with 18. She and Lisa Ribble handed out six assists apiece.
Olivia Bradley brought down 15 rebounds; Wells added 11.
In the earlier matchup, Fairmont forged a 38-30 halftime lead over the Thundering Herd, only to see point guard Vicki Bostic go down with an injury at the same time Marshall began to employ a full-court press and Sharon Pelphrey, the nation's second leading scorer began to get hot.
Pelphrey finished with 23 for the Herd.
Charleston and Fairmont will square off at 5 p.m. Saturday in the tournament semi-final, with WVU and Marshall paired in the final at 7.
