William Lee Carr Jr. was born on August 25, 1949, at Hall, West Virginia, the son of William and Dema Zirkle Carr. He had three brothers and four sisters. According to his sister, Delores Chapman, "Junior," as he was called, loved hunting and animals. She related the selling of one of Junior's coon hounds who missed his master so much that the dog hanged himself while attempting to get loose from his new owner. States Delores, "Junior was so heartbroken."
Junior attended Mt. Nebo Elementary School and Philip Barbour High School before enlisting in the Marine Corps in January 1967.
His tour of duty in Vietnam began September 27, 1967. On July 19, 1968, then Lance Corporal William Lee Carr Jr. was on patrol in Quang Ngai Province when he was wounded by a Viet Cong explosive device, which resulted in his death.
