Howard Francis Woodyard was born on April 2, 1914, in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia, U.S.A. His parents were named Thomas L. Woodyard and Anna Liversedge Woodyard. He was married to Helen Madelyn Summers Woodyard, and he had a son named Howard Woodyard Jr. Madelyn, widowed for the rest of her life, never remarried. Howard had a convertible he loved. Before entering the service, he was employed by the State Road Commission.

Pfc. Woodyard's enlistment day was March 28, 1942. His service number was 5137343. Howard was shot on the battlefield, but he lived for several days after being shot. Imagine how traumatic it was for him fighting for his life just to die. He was deceased March 6, 1945, in Germany. It took two years for his body to be returned to the U.S.A., which was 1947. He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston, West Virginia.

Howard's son was barely one year old when he died. His son was three when his body was returned.
