The West Virginia Division of Culture and History will present its “Second Saturday” program of museum activities on Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex, in Charleston. The theme this month is Celebrations Around the World. The free program is geared for children of all ages.
On Saturday, kids can enjoy participating in a scavenger hunt while using the Museum Bingo Sheet all day long. From 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., they can celebrate different cultural traditions by making crafts such as a Chinese paper lantern and a Japanese postcard for the Chinese and Japanese New Year, a paper mat for Kwanzaa, a dreidel for Hanukkah and a Christmas card for the upcoming holiday in the Great Hall. They also can examine and play with some Appalachian toys such as a whimmy diddle, flap jack and Jacob’s ladder at the hands-on History Cart in the Museum Galleries. These items will be available for purchase in the West Virginia Museum Shop, just off the Great Hall.
At 11 a.m., noon, and 1 p.m., participants can gather in a Discovery Room to hear the story Christmas in the Country which was written by Cynthia Rylant. After the story, they can make a bookmark.
At 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m., kids can see a lap loom demonstration in the Museum North Connections Room.
It is recommended that children under the age of 13 be accompanied by an adult.
