Ten members of the West Virginia Legislature received Legislative Leadership awards for their significant accomplishments in the arts at the Governor’s Arts Awards gala on Monday, March 15, at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The event was hosted by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
Sen. Robert H. Plymale, D-Wayne, and Del. Linda Sumner, R-Raleigh, were presented with Arts in Education awards. Plymale was recognized for his work for the Marshall Artist Series, the Huntington Museum of Art and the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center; Sumner for her contributions to the Beckley Arts Center, the West Virginia Dance Company, the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia and Theatre West Virginia.
Sen. Dan Foster, D-Kanawha, and Del. Jim Morgan, D-Cabell, received Community Arts awards. Foster made significant contributions to the Clay Center for the Performing Arts and Sciences, West Virginia Symphony, Charleston Stage Company and Charleston Ballet; Morgan was recognized for his contributions to the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, Huntington Museum of Art and Arts Resources for the Tri-State.
The Cultural Facilities awards went to Del. Richard J. Iaquinta, D-Harrison, and Sen. Roman W. Prezioso, D-Marion. Iaquinta was recognized for his work for the Scottish Heritage and Italian Heritage festivals and the Veterans Memorial Park Amphitheater; Prezioso for his contributions to the Metropolitan Theatre, Arts Monongalia and the West Virginia Public Theatre.
Sen. Ron Stollings, D-Boone, and Del. Harry Keith White, D-Mingo, were presented with Folk Arts awards. Stollings was recognized for his love of old-time music and dedication to preserving it and for his support for the Vandalia Gathering and the Appalachian String Band Music Festival; White made contributions to the Tug Valley Arts Council and his role in increasing the Competitive Arts Grants fund by 7.5 percent, saving numerous jobs in the arts and arts organizations across the state.
The Lifetime Achievement awards went to Del. Thomas W. Campbell, D-Greenbrier, and Sen. Earl Ray Tomblin, D-Logan. Campbell has made significant contributions to the Greenbrier Valley Theatre, Carnegie Hall and North House Museum; Tomblin was honored for his extraordinary service to the arts during his career in the legislature, especially support for the Aracoma Story and Museum in the Park.
Other awards presented on Monday included the Distinguished Service to the Arts Award to Jeanne Mozier of Berkeley Springs; Artist of the Year Award to Zachary J. Orcutt of Parkersburg; Arts in Education awards to the Appalachian Education Initiative of Morgantown and West Virginia Dance Company of Beckley; the Leadership in the Arts awards to Oglebay Institute in Wheeling and The Old Brick Playhouse in Elkins; and the Governor’s Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement to Lynn Boggess of Parkersburg.
