The West Virginia Division of Culture and History is announcing a call for entries for its annual juried quilt and wall hanging exhibition. The free summer-long exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2010, will be displayed in the Great Hall of the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston, from May 24 through Sept. 3, 2010.
Quilts, both handmade and machine made, by West Virginia residents are eligible for the exhibition. First- ($500), second- ($400), and third-place ($300) awards will be made in the following categories: pieced quilts, appliqued quilts, quilts made with mixed/other techniques, and wall hangings. In addition, the Division will provide two Purchase Awards and add the quilt and wall hanging chosen to the collection of the West Virginia State Museum.
The judge also may award a Best of Show prize of $100. Honorable mention or other non-monetary awards will be given at the discretion of the judge. Quilts and wall hangings shown previously in a Division of Culture and History Quilts and Wall Hangings juried exhibition are not eligible.
In addition to the monetary awards, all winners will receive ribbons. Awards will be presented on Saturday, May 29, in the Norman L. Fagan West Virginia State Theater of the Culture Center as part of the 34th annual Vandalia Gathering.
Entries must be postmarked no later than April 8 and arrive at the Culture Center by April 16. Hand-delivered entries will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on April 15-16. Each entrant may submit one quilt and one wall hanging, which must be accompanied by a non-refundable fee of $20 for each entry.
Doris Goins of Kendallville, Ind., will serve as judge for this year’s exhibition. A sewing enthusiast since early childhood, Goins began quilting in 1992 as a way to express her creativity and relieve the stress of being a working mother. This new hobby soon turned into a full-time position as she opened a longarm machine quilting business, Loving Stitches, in 1996.
Goins is continually trying out new techniques in her quilts, both traditional and contemporary in style. Her work has won several Hoffman Fabric Challenge awards, as well as other local and national contests. She was designated as a certified judge by the National Quilting Association in 2005.
Goins will teach a workshop for beginning and intermediate quilters on how to make smoothly round circles, crisp applique edges and narrow stems entitled “Applique Circles, Stems and More!,” on Friday, April 30, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Students will be working by hand in the class, but the techniques taught work for both machine and hand applique work. The workshop is limited to 20 participants. There is a $20 fee per person and registration is required.
