The West Virginia Division of Culture and History will present two “Discover Arts and Crafts” workshops at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston, with basket-maker Joyce Cain of Tanner, W.Va. Seating in both workshops is limited.
On Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., visitors can make a nine-inch by nine-inch-square-base basket that measures 11 inches deep. The basket will have a one-inch-wide oak handle that extends seven inches above the top of the basket.
Students also can take a split-bottom woven stool workshop on Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The stools also are made of white oak and are pre-sanded and finished in a clear varnish. Participants will weave a herringbone pattern for the seat with one-half inch reed.
There is a $20 fee for each workshop and an additional materials fee that is paid directly to Cain. Class size for both workshops is limited to 15 participants, and registration is required.
