The West Virginia Archives and History section of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History will present the third annual showcase of its unique collections from 7 - 9 p.m., on Monday, Dec. 5, at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The event and a reception are free and the public is invited to attend. The library will close at 5 p.m., and reopen for the showcase only.
This year’s theme is “A Capitol Affair,” chosen because 2012 marks the 80th anniversary of the building’s dedication. Visitors will have the exceptional opportunity to see drawings and sketches of the Capitol, correspondence with Cass Gilbert, the building’s architect, and photographs of its construction.
There also will be old photographs; distinctive books, manuscripts and newspapers; Civil War documents and West Virginia Civil War medals; genealogy tools; musical selections; slide shows; and clips from the audio and video archives. Visitors have the chance to take “behind-the-scene” tours of Archives resources.
“This annual event gives us an opportunity to share our favorite materials from the collections of the State Archives with their true owners, the people of West Virginia,” said Joe Geiger, director of archives and history.
Refreshments will be served in the Great Hall.
