West Virginia Division of Culture & History’s Free September 2013 Events Include
Railroads and the Civil War, Genealogy, Archaeological Findings Near Moundsville
CHARLESTON, W.Va. --The West Virginia Division of Culture and History’s upcoming events include a lecture on the vital role railroads played during the Civil War, tips for researching your family tree and the latest findings unearthed at an archaeological site south of Moundsville.
The following programs are free and open to the public:
West Virginia Independence Hall
- The War Came By Train: Daniel Carroll Toomey, an author, historian, educator and guest curator at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Md., will discuss the important role the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad played during the Civil War at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at West Virginia Independence Hall.
Culture Center
- Genealogy and the Revolutionary War: Genealogists Joetta Kuhn and Patsy Adkins of the Anne Bailey Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will discuss how to start researching your family's history, common problems and solutions in research, and free resources at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. Advance registration is requested. Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex
- Further Insights at a Late Woodland Occupation in Marshall County, W.Va.: Archaeologist Jamie S. Meece of Cultural Resource Analysts Inc., with offices in Hurricane, W.Va., will talk about the latest findings unearthed at an archaeological site south of Moundsville at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville.
- Archaeology Day, featuring behind-the-scenes tours, special activities, displays and demonstrations from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville.
