CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Culture and History’s annual exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2016, was unveiled in the Great Hall of the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston on Friday, May 27.
The crowd-pleasing juried exhibition features 54 exquisite quilts and wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quilters. Quiltmaking is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most treasured art forms, and this annual display is a favorite with visitors from all over the United States and abroad. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 6.
The exhibition includes work by 49 quilters from 19 counties. Winners were selected in four categories: pieced quilts, applique quilts, mixed/other quilts and wall hangings. Awards were presented at 7 p.m., May 27, during the Friday evening concert of the Vandalia Gathering. Quilt awards are $750 for first place, $400 for second place and $300 for third place. The wall hanging awards are $400 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. The division also made two purchase awards, one quilt and one wall hanging, and the judge designated a Best of Show prize of $100. In addition, eight nonmonetary honorable mention distinctions were made. A complete list of exhibitors and winners is attached. High resolution photographs are available at http://wvculture.zenfolio.com/p467743698.
For the first time in the division’s Quilt and Wall Hanging Exhibition, a National Association of Certified Quilt Judges (NACQJ) Award of Merit has been awarded. NACQJ certified judges have the option of awarding this special ribbon to a deserving quilt, and the award typically goes to a novice quilter whose work shows creativity and has achieved recognized standards of quiltmaking excellence. Quilters of Award of Merit winning quilts are presented a letter of congratulations in addition to a lovely rosette ribbon.
“The quilt exhibition in the Great Hall is one of our most popular and colorful exhibitions,” said Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith. “Visitors enjoy the fine handiwork of West Virginians whose creativity and appreciation of tradition are showcased in the quilts and wall hangings we feature.”
Priscilla Godfrey of Philomont, Va., has been quilting for more than 30 years. Godfrey became a National Quilting Association-certified judge in 1986 and has judged in many states along the Eastern Seaboard and Midwest. She also has exhibited and won awards for her quilts at NQA annual shows throughout the United States and represented Loudoun County, Virginia, in Frankfurt and Hoffheim, Germany, in 2012 at an international art exchange. Since 1979, Godfrey has been a member and officer at the Waterford Quilters Guild in Waterford, Va., and currently serves as 2016 Auction Committee Chairman.
The Culture Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
