May 26, 2017
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Culture and History’s (WVDCH) annual exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2017, was unveiled in the Great Hall of the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston on Friday, May 26.
The crowd-pleasing juried exhibition features 51 exquisite quilts and wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quilters. Quilt making is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most treasured art forms, and this annual display is a favorite with visitors from all over the United States and abroad. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 5.
The exhibition includes work by 41 quilters from 20 counties. Winners were selected in four categories: pieced quilts, applique quilts, mixed/other quilts and wall hangings. Awards were presented at 7 p.m., May 26, during the Friday evening concert of the Vandalia Gathering. Quilt awards are $750 for first place, $400 for second place and $300 for third place. The wall hanging awards are $400 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. The division also made two purchase awards, one quilt and one wall hanging, and the judge designated a Best of Show prize of $100. In addition, eight nonmonetary honorable mention distinctions were made. A complete list of exhibitors and winners is attached. High resolution photographs of the winners are available at https://goo.gl/KUjDJi and gallery of all exhibitors at http://wvculture.zenfolio.com/p742693443.
First-place winners in this year’s show include Beverly Javins of Charleston, Kanawha County for Early October at Glade Creek in the Wall Hanging category; Carol Massey of Elkview, Kanawha County for Roses and Ivy in the Applique category; Carol Miller of Bruceton Mills, Preston County for Mi Amor (Blocks) in the Mixed/Other category; and Cheryl Sparks of Parkersburg, Wood County for Glacier Star in the Pieced category. Spark’s quilt also was selected as the Best of Show.
For the second time in as many years, the division’s Quilt and Wall Hanging Exhibition will feature a National Association of Certified Quilt Judges (NACQJ) Award of Merit. NACQJ certified judges have the option of awarding this special ribbon to a deserving quilt. The award typically goes to a novice quilter whose work shows creativity and has achieved recognized standards of quilt making excellence. Quilters of Award of Merit winning quilts are presented a letter of congratulations in addition to a lovely rosette ribbon. This year’s recipient is Charli Fulton of Charleston, Kanawha County for her wall hanging, Shibori Album.
“Each year, the West Virginia Juried Quilt Exhibition celebrates quilting, and the range of quilts and wall hangings is fascinating,” said Randall Reid-Smith, commissioner of the WVDCH. “From traditional patterns and fabrics to contemporary designs and materials, there is always a quilt in this exhibition that calls to someone.”
This year’s judge, Linda Scholten of Oxford, Ohio, is an author, speaker, teacher and quilter as well as a National Quilting Association (NQA) certified judge. She started sewing at the age of 10, in a 4-H clothing club, and began making quilts in 1975. Scholten is a charter member of the American Quilter’s Society and the Columbus, Ohio, Color and Design Group; a member of the NQA and Oxford Piecemakers; and has judged shows across the Midwest in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Her work has shown internationally and is published in three books. Her quilts were accepted into the AQS Paducah quilt show in 2005 and 2017. Scholten held a quilt workshop at the Culture Center in early May titled “Taking Care of Your Vintage Singer Featherweight (Model 221),” and taught students about the care and use of the whole machine, from case to foot controller.
The Culture Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
