MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — Susan Weaver, director of the Museum of Ceramics located in East Liverpool, Ohio, will present “East Liverpool Potters Southbound to West Virginia” at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville on Thursday, May 31, at 7 p.m. The presentation is part of the Complex’s monthly lecture and film series and is free and open to the public.
Weaver worked as library director and professor at Kent State University for nearly 30 years. During this time, she served as a consultant to Greek academic libraries, directed three of the Kent regional campus libraries and taught in the University’s Master of Library Science program. She retired in 2016 but continues to teach in the Library School. In 2017, Weaver became director of the Museum of Ceramics. She previously worked at the museum as an interpreter/tour guide in the early years of its existence.
As East Liverpool ran out of riverfront land, enterprising potters crossed the Ohio to the “Southside” to expand or start potteries. The Harker Pottery Co., Taylor, Smith & Taylor Co., Edwin M. Knowles China Co. and Homer Laughlin China Co. all moved south to the West Virginia towns of Chester and Newell.
Operated by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex features one of the largest conical burial mounds built by the Adena people between 250 - 150 B.C. and ranks as one of the largest earthen mortuary mounds anywhere in the world. Exhibits and displays in the Delf Norona Museum interpret what is known about the lives of these prehistoric people and the construction of the mound. The complex also houses the West Virginia Archaeological Research and Collections Management Facility.
Admission to Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex is free. The Delf Norona Museum, located at 801 Jefferson Avenue, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sunday and Monday. Outdoor access closes at 4:30 p.m.
