The West Virginia Division of Culture and History opened the third installment of a new exhibit entitled Legislative Districts on Monday, Feb. 19, on the lower level of the Cultural Center, adjacent to the temporary cafeteria. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
The third segment has photographs from Senate District 6, as well as House districts 21, 22, 23, and 24. There are 22 images on display, including the felling of the “Mingo Oak” in September 1938. Once the largest and oldest white oak tree in the country, it was
145 feet tall and had a circumference of 30 feet, nine inches. Photographs from Senate District 9 and House District 27 will be on display from Feb. 26 to March 2, wrapping up the month of February. The final week of the exhibit, March 5 through 9, will display photographs from Senate District 5 and House districts 15 and 16.
Legislative Districts is comprised of historic photographs from the West Virginia State Archives that have been chosen according to legislative districts in the state. The exhibit will continue to rotate photographs of House and Senate districts on a weekly basis throughout the legislative session.
