The West Virginia Division of Culture and History will continue its Cultural Heritage Lecture Series with Tom Vasale and his presentation “Garden Inspirations: Views from Public and Private Gardens to Inspire Your Own,” on Wednesday, April 11, at 7 p.m., at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. The evening event is free and open to the public.
Vasale’s talk will include slides of private and public gardens in the United States, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands and Israel. The slides show design elements that he found inspirational and he will discuss how he adapted these elements into his own work. In addition, participants will learn to look beyond the initial visual presentation of a garden to understand its function and how the garden space affects its visitors and inhabitants.
Vasale, of Charleston, has been the owner of Tom’s Word Horticulture Consulting since 1985. He also is the “Garden Expert” for WCHS TV-8 and is featured live for call ins on Tuesday mornings and afternoons.
Vasale also has served as a horticulturist for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, an Agriculture Extension Agent for West Virginia University, West Virginia editor for People, Places and Plants magazine and was featured on “Ask the Garden Expert,” WCHS Talk Radio 580 from 2003-2005.
Vasale is a member of Perennial Plant Association, West Virginia Urban Forestry Council and Capitol Soil Conservation District. He has published numerous articles in publications such as Fine Gardening Magazine, South Hills Journal, West Virginia Executive and People, Places and Plants among others.
