The West Virginia Archives and History Library of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History is continuing its series of genealogy and history related workshops on selected Tuesdays in May. The sessions will take place in the library at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston, from 6 - 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
The workshops will focus on specialized resources available in the Archives and History Library and how to use them. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and will be offered hands-on examples or instruction with the materials and research issues involved.
The first workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 8, and staff librarian Susan Scouras will present “Newspapers in Genealogical and Historical Research.” Scouras will provide tips for locating announcements of noteworthy family events, as well as discuss the published and Internet resources available to assist in searching newspapers.
On Tuesday, May 15, Bob Taylor, archives and history library manager, will discuss “Preserving Cherished Memories.” Taylor will address the importance of collecting information from older family members and how to document interviews; he also will discuss preservation of sentimental items. Participants are encouraged to bring scrapbooks, Bibles, photographs, and other items for this discussion.
Advance registration for the workshops is not required, but is encouraged to help plan seating arrangements and handouts for the sessions. Genealogical and historical societies are invited to hold their regular meeting or to plan a field trip in conjunction with the workshops.
