Other newsCalhoun-Gilmer writers meetThe Calhoun-Gilmer Writer’s Guild held a two-day summer retreat at the camp of Kitty and Jeanne Wilson of Grantsville on the banks of the Middle Fork River. Guild members created and read poetry, short stories and essays; sang songs around a campfire; walked along the river’s edge; and held a memorial for guild member Mary Ann Barrows, who passed away recently. Attending guild members included: Jeanne Wilson, Bob Weaver, Lisa Sheldon, Mary Wildfire, Jim Mullooley, Bill Reichenback, Harriet Whipkey, Cynthia Wildfire and Lisa Hayes-Minney. Special guests included former guild member Dr. Barbara Tedford, visiting Ohio writer Penny Fox and Gilmer County writer Donna Morningstar. The group supports and encourages writers in the Calhoun-Gilmer County area. Members’ writing samples are available on the guild’s website, along with articles on writing, writing prompts and links to books on writing. Meeting schedules, member listings and links are also posted. The Calhoun-Gilmer Writer’s Guild meets monthly. New members are always welcome, and there are no dues or fees. Morgantown author releases new children’s bookThey were courageous and resourceful pioneers. They made arduous journeys, carved careers out of the wilderness, defied conventions and fought for their freedom. They were community leaders, artists, and entrepreneurs. The women profiled in Outrageous Women of the American Frontier by Morgantown author Mary Rodd Furbee boldly faced the gritty realities of daily life and made their marks in history. Published by John Wiley & Sons children’s trade division, the book is geared toward readers aged 8-14. The book has been favorably reviewed in Publisher’s Weekly, Booklist, School Library Journal, and other publications. Furbee’s other books include Outrageous Women of Colonial America, John Wiley & Sons, 2001; Anne Bailey, Frontier Scout, and Shawnee Captive: The Story of Mary Ingles, Morgan Reynolds, Inc., 2001; and Women of the American Revolution, Lucent Books, 1999.
