ORBI to sponsor May ADA workshop

The Ohio River Border Initiative (ORBI) is sponsoring a three-hour workshop for arts organizations titled “What You Need to Know About Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.” The workshop will take place Friday, May 30, 2003 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Wheeling Artisan Center in downtown Wheeling, WV. If you are involved with an arts organization in West Virginia or Ohio, this workshop will help you bring your work into compliance with the spirit and the letter of federal law concerning making all your programs accessible to people with disabilities.

The workshop will focus on how the ADA works and how ADA compliance can benefit the work of your organization. The principal presenter will be Mark Derry of Eastlake, Derry & Associates, consultants to businesses and agencies on ADA compliance. Derry is actively involved with the ADA Coalition and the Statewide Independent Living Council. Martha Collins, 504/ADA Coordinator for the Arts Section of the WV Department of Arts, Culture and History, and Phyllis Hairston, 504/ADA Coordinator for the Ohio Arts Council will also discuss the role of the state arts agencies in promoting compliance with the ADA. The agenda for the workshop will allow you to get answers to individual questions.

ORBI is a joint project of the Ohio Arts Council and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. This workshop is an outgrowth of ORBI’s mission to serve both sides of the Ohio River Valley. This workshop is open to volunteers, board members and staff of any arts organization in West Virginia or Ohio. There is no registration fee for the workshop, but you must register in advance.
