The Board of Supervisors of Ohio County was held at the Court House in Wheeling where several issues were discussed including communication to the Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.

Soldiers of the 10th West Virginia Infantry arrived in Wheeling from Bermuda Hundred.

January 4

January 6
Three men were executed for murder in Parkersburg.

Two escaped Atheneum prisoners were spotted at Benwood in Marshall County.

Three men convicted of desertion and forgery arrived in Wheeling from Harpers Ferry.

January 11
Confederate troops under General Thomas L. Rosser surprised Union troops stationed at Beverly in Randolph County and took more than five hundred prisoners.

The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals met at the Ohio County Courthouse in Wheeling to hear preliminary motions.

Lieutenant John John McAdams of the 10th West Virginia Infantry arrived in Wheeling after escaping from a Confederate prison in South Carolina.

Nine Confederate prisoners who had been captured in Braxton County arrived in Wheeling and were committed to the Atheneum.

In an address to the state legislature, Governor Arthur I. Boreman praised Adjutant General Francis P. Pierpont for his work in producing an annual report containing the names of all soldiers serving in West Virginia regiments.

The West Virginia House of Delegates passed a bill to extend the time allowed the civil officers of Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan counties in which to qualify and give bond.

January 19
Union General Phil Sheridan traveled on a special train from Parkersburg to Wheeling.

Two Confederates were killed by a detachment of Company A of the 6th West Virginia Infantry.

January 20
In the House of Delegates, Cabell County Delegate James H. Ferguson introduced a resolution for the appointment of a committee to report a bill providing for the immediate abolition of slavery in West Virginia.

January 21
The legislature passed a joint resolution appointing a day for instituting proceedings for the removal of John W. Kennedy, Judge of the Tenth Judicial Circuit.

The West Virginia State Legislature passed a joint resolution instructing the West Virginia congressional delegation to vote for the constitutional amendment abolishing slavery.

January 24
The Provost Marshal of West Virginia received a telegram from Washington announcing that the state's required quota of soldiers for the upcoming draft was 4,431.

In the House of Delegates, the Committee on Privileges and Elections read a report charging Delegate George K. Cox with "nearly all the crimes known to the law."

January 25
Ten Confederate prisoners from Braxton County and surrounding areas were brought to Wheeling and placed in The Atheneum.

January 26
The legislature passed a bill authorizing the governor to surrender certain prisoners for exchange.

The legislature passed an act moving the county seat of Jefferson County from Charles Town to Shepherdstown.

The West Virginia Legislature passed an act to pay state scouts.

January 28
A battery of Union artillery arrived in Wheeling from Colombus.

January 29

January 30
A soldier of Conkling's First Ohio Battery was struck by a sled on Main Street in Wheeling and suffered injuries due to the blow.

January 31
Hon. W. T. Willey was elected without opposition, the subjects of an Agricultural College and the charter of the Central West Virginia Railroad are brought to the legislature, and the bill abolishing Slavery in the State, passed the House.

The 23rd Army Corp left Benwood in Marshall County and was described as "the most successful movements ever made in the annals of troop transportation."
